Jamaican Patty (Jamaica)

Serves 6

Ingredients

Method

500 g. Flour
1 tsp. Turmeric
250 g. Cold Butter, Cubed
120 ml. Cold Water
500 g. Ground Beef
1 Onion, Chopped
2 Garlic Cloves, Minced
1 Scotch Bonnet Pepper, Finely Chopped
1 tsp. Curry Powder
1 tsp. Thyme
Salt and Pepper to Taste
Vegetable Oil for Frying

To make the dough, combine the flour, turmeric, and butter in a large bowl. Rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Gradually add the water, mixing until a dough forms. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

To make the filling, heat a small amount of oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, and Scotch bonnet pepper. Cook until the onion is softened.

Add the ground beef, curry powder, and thyme to the pan. Cook until the beef is browned. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Roll out the dough and cut into rounds. Spoon some of the filling onto one half of each round, then fold the dough over the filling and crimp the edges to seal.

Heat a large amount of oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Fry the patties until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels.

Serve the patties hot.
