Baklava (Balkans)

Serves 24

Ingredients

Method

½ kg. Phyllo Dough
½ kg. Mixed Nuts (Such As Walnuts, Pistachios, Almonds), Finely Chopped
200 g. Butter, Melted
1 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
500 g. Sugar
500 Water
1 tbsp. Lemon Juice
2 tbsp. Honey

Preheat your oven to 180°C. Butter a baking dish.

Mix the finely chopped nuts with the ground cinnamon.

Lay a sheet of phyllo dough in the dish, brush with melted butter, then repeat with half of the sheets, brushing each one with butter.

Spread the nut mixture evenly over the dough.

Top with the remaining sheets, brushing each one with butter.

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.

Bake for about 50 minutes, until golden brown and crisp.

While the baklava is baking, make the syrup: Combine the sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the lemon juice and honey, and simmer for another 2 minutes.

Pour the hot syrup over the baked baklava as soon as it comes out of the oven.

Let the baklava cool completely before serving.
