Toffee Apples

Serves 8

Ingredients

Method

8 Apples
450 g. Granulated Sugar
25 g. Butter
2 tbsp. Malt Vinegar
3 tbsp. Golden Syrup

Wash and dry the apples, stand them up on their end and place a lolly pop stick into the core of the apple and set aside.

Grease a baking tray with butter and set aside.

Place the sugar, butter, golden syrup and vinegar in a heavy based saucepan.

Turn the hob / stove top onto medium high heat and place the saucepan on the heat to melt the sugars etc. Gradually bring the contents to the boil and allow the sugars to turn a lovely golden colour. This may take a few minutes.

Once you are happy that you have reached the required colour for your toffee remove from the stove and take one of your apples, holding onto the stick, slightly tilt the saucepan and place the apple in the toffee and turn it around until the entire apple is covered with toffee.

Place the covered apple on the buttered baking sheet upright to harden. Hold for stick for 30 seconds and a flat base will form from the toffee on the apple which will enable it to stand up freely.

Allow the toffee on the apples to harden which only takes a few minutes.

If you have any toffee left over you can make Nut Brittle. Place some nuts on a baking tray and pour the remaining toffee over the nuts and allow to cool. Break the toffee into bite size pieces and serve. This is how you make nut brittle.

N.B. Boiled sugar is extremely hot and can be very dangerous to work with. Make sure no children or animals can get in the way when making anything with boiling sugar as it can burn very badly.
