Indian / Pakistani, Starter Vegan Lactose Free Nut Free, Onion (Large)

Pakoras / Bhajis

Method

1 Onion (Large)
150 g. Gram Flour
½ tsp. Chilli Powder
½ tsp. Turmeric Powder
1 tsp. Cumin Powder (Ground)
¼ tsp. Salt to Taste
6 tbsp. Water (Still)
1 l. Vegetable Oil for Deep Frying

Slice the onion and set aside.

Mix all the ingredients for the batter in a bowl.

Add enough water very slowly while mixing to form a thick batter.

Heat the oil in a deep wok or saucepan.

Gently coat the onion slices in the batter before carefully placing in the hot oil.

Fry until golden brown over a low to medium heat, gently turning, every so often.

Drain on a paper towel.

Serve hot with a chutney.

A very simple chutney which goes very well with pakoras is mint -yoghurt which is simply plain yoghurt with a bit of mint jelly added.
